PAST
PRESENT FUTURE
The mission--to collect and maintain, to
promote and support, to educate, to cultivate, to sponsor
and develop. This was the vision of a small group of people
who came together in 1995 to ensure that the remarkably rich
heritage of art and artists in the Manistee area would be
recognized and their work would be maintained and shown. The
founders of the Manistee Art Institute (MAI) also recognized
the wealth of artistic talent in that currently exists in
Manistee County. To support, encourage and help develop this
talent the MIA has held workshops and classes as well as showcasing
the art in frequent exhibits. To celebrate its tenth anniversary,
the MAI presented its first juried exhibit last year. This
exhibit brought together the best artists in three counties
in an outstanding display of talent.
The founders pledge to those who are not
artists, but who deeply appreciate and support art has also
been kept by the devoted and hard working MAI Board of Directors
and members over the past ten years. Some major accomplishments
are:
- 43 Exhibits have been provided for the public free of
charge.
- There are now over 65 pieces of art in the permanent collection
- Over 50 workshops, classes and seminars have been offered
to children, as well as adults.
- The "Picture Person" project has been offered
to schools throughout the county.
- In 2001 the MAI was recognized by the Michigan Association
of Community Art Agencies for "achievements, successes
and outstanding dedication and commitment to art."
- Partnerships with the Manistee County Historical Museum,
West Shore Medical Center,Manistee Symphony Orchestra and
Chorus, Manistee County Schools, Manistee Civic Players,
and the Ramsdell Restoration Project have brought art to
a large and diverse audience.
