About Us

MAI---A tiny seed planted and nourished by a few visionary folk---has grown and flourished in a little more than ten years to a healthy, vibrant organization.

From a handful of community members concerned with preserving and displaying the visual arts, The Manistee Art Institute now has almost 300 members and volunteers. It has a significant permanent collection representing local artists, as well as those with international reputations. Art work from the collection may be enjoyed by the public in exhibits and in local businesses and governmental buildings, where they are displayed on rotating schedules.

The MAI mounts three to six exhibits annually. Some are in collaboration with other organizations, such as the Manistee County Historical Museum, and most are underwritten and supported by local businesses and individuals. The West Shore Medical Center and MAI partner the Healing Arts Gallery with several exhibits throughout the year.

Outreach to the community continues with summer workshops for all ages, with enhancement programs in the schools, and by active participation with the Manistee County Arts Alliance.

The Manistee Art Institute continues to be a vital force for promoting the arts in Manistee, for maintaining the artistic legacy of the area, and for making the visual arts a part of the daily life of this County.
